The Riverfront Apartments was once home to one of Jefferson's pioneering businesses, the Copeland – Ryder Co. This historic building was built in sections dating back as early as 1885.Copeland – Ryder Co. was a shoe factory known for making quality shoes and started in Jefferson in 1868.They were one of the first shoe factories in the Midwest.Copeland – Ryder stayed in business for over a century and decided to close in 1977.

Then in 1988 the building was converted to apartments with an entirely new interior including all new electrical, plumbing and mechanical equipment. The only interior piece of history that remains is the charm of the exposed brick walls and hardwood flooring that is found in many apartments.

The established exterior of the building required that the architect be most creative in designing the apartments.Because of this creativity each floor plan is unique and features many ideas found in modern day homes, including angled walls and sunken or raised rooms. These characteristics give the distinction of living in a historic building with a modern lifestyle.

This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
